10 Tips Every New Commander Should Know

FAQ

What is the single best tip for new Command An Army players?
Fight with your troops, not in front of them. Your commander is one body on a field of units — used as a leader inside the formation you multiply your army, used as a solo duelist you feed the enemy scoreboard.
How do I get free Gems at the start?
Redeem the four launch codes (WAR, RELEASE, BUGFIX, LEBALANCE) for 1,400 Gems total — it takes under a minute and the full list is on our codes page. New codes drop in the official Discord after updates.
How do I win more matches as a beginner?
Stand on capture points, keep formation orders flowing (block before contact, attack when their stance breaks), and play five defense matches in a row to learn the approach lanes. Objective time beats kill count in every match.
Should I spend Gems on rare units early?
Spend on roles you are missing first. Rarer does not always mean stronger, and a common unit with easy duplicates ascends faster than a rare pull you cannot feed.

Every game’s launch week is a knowledge vacuum, and the players who fill it fastest look like geniuses for a month. Command An Army is days old — the tips below are the habits that separated the top of the lobby from the bottom in the first weekend, and none of them require rare units, deep wallets, or fast hands.

1. Fight with your line, not ahead of it

The game’s own pitch says you fight alongside your soldiers. Commanders who duel ahead of their formation die alone; commanders who fight inside it multiply it. If you can not see your own troops in your peripheral vision, you have left them.

2. Redeem every code before your first match

Four launch codes, 1,400 Gems, one minute of typing — the codes page has the tested list. New codes land in the official Discord after patches, so re-check after every update. Free currency you redeem on day one compounds across every match after it.

3. Treat capture points as the scoreboard

Kills are a means; points are the win condition. The capture points guide covers the objective math — the short version is that standing on contested ground banks progress while off-point brawling donates time to the enemy team.

4. Issue orders even when you feel silly doing it

Troops without orders are passive far beyond what new players expect. Block before the charge lands, attack when the enemy stance breaks, heal between waves. The formations guide is the full vocabulary — and narrating your orders out loud for five matches is the fastest self-coaching trick there is.

5. Hold one of each role before doubling anything

An army needs a holder, a breaker, and a plan before it needs a second anything. The army building guide walks the four-slot system — the mistake it exists to prevent is four damage units and zero frontline.

6. Feed your common units

Duplicates ascend; rarity is a ceiling, not a stat line. A common unit you can fuse and master will carry you further than a rare pull sitting at base level — the rarity guide explains the whole trade.

7. Play five defense matches in a row

Nothing teaches a map’s approach lanes like defending them. After five holds, your attacking improves dramatically because you finally know where defenses feel safe — which is where they are weakest. The attack vs defend guide covers the side-specific mindsets.

8. Check what a unit becomes before recruiting it

Mercenary becomes a Knight. Archer becomes a Longbowman. The recruiting question is what does this unit evolve into? — documented chains live on the evolution paths page, and the upgrade tracks are all explained in the upgrading guide.

9. Dismount on purpose, not by accident

If your cavalry keeps dying on point interiors, the dedicated dismount order is the experiment to run — mounted speed wins open ground, foot fighting wins cramped ground. Stance-matching is half the command game.

10. Join the official Discord

The official server is where codes drop first, patches get announced, and the meta conversation is happening in real time. Following it costs nothing and keeps you ahead of every aggregator site — this wiki included; we re-check our codes page against it after every update.

Before your next match: a 60-second checklist

Ten tips is a lot to hold mid-firefight. This is the compressed version — run it in queue and again at the first death:

  1. Codes redeemed? (Once per account — codes page.)
  2. Four slots, four roles? Holder, breaker, flex, flex — no gaps, no vanity doubles.
  3. Side picked on purpose? Speed-heavy lineup attacks; stability-heavy defends (the guide).
  4. Order plan in your head? Block before contact, attack after theirs breaks, heal between waves (formations).
  5. Which point is next? If you died “nowhere in particular”, that was the leak.

Sixty seconds, five questions, most of this page. The habits compound from there.

How do the tips stack into skill?

Notice the shape of the list: tips 1–3 are setup (currency, composition, side), 4–9 are in-match decisions (orders, positioning, economy), and 10 is information (Discord). Setup tips pay once per session; decision tips pay every fight; information pays every patch. Players plateau when they keep re-optimizing setup — the third Gem-spending spreadsheet of the week — while their in-match order timing never improves. If you can only drill one thing, drill the formation orders: it is the skill that every composition, every side, and every patch shares.

Where to go from here

If you only read two more pages, make them the beginner guide (your full first hour, sequenced) and the unit type overview (what each of the six classes is actually for). Everything else on this site hangs off those two.
