Mercenary in Command An Army: The Squire-Knight Evolution Line
Mercenary → Squire → Knight is the game's original grow-a-champion line: cheap base, common duplicates, three stages. Role, economy, and what is still unverified.

Why keep duplicates of a cheap unit?
Which slot does the Mercenary line fill?
Some units are bought for what they are; the Mercenary is bought for what it becomes. At launch it was the game’s only documented multi-stage evolution chain, and ten days in it remains the cleanest example of the site’s favorite upgrade argument: a modest base with a strong documented ceiling beats a dead-end pull with a prettier stat line. This page is the line’s record — chain, role, economy, and the open questions.
What is the Mercenary’s evolution line?
The official info channel lists it among the launch chains:
| Stage | Notes |
|---|---|
| Mercenary | Base unit, melee frontline family |
| Squire | Second stage, documented at launch |
| Knight | Third stage — the heavy frontline payoff |
Promotion gates on Mastery Level 20, the cap, reached only through play — dealing damage, defeating enemies, and being meaningfully deployed. The September 13 patch increased Mastery XP from troops across the board, which quietly shortened every evolution project in the game, this one included (patch history).
What role does the line fill?
Holder — the frontline answer in the army building role table. A grown Knight is built to stand in the melee scrum on a capture point, keep the line intact, and give the breakers behind it something to punish enemies against. The tier list puts the chain at B, trending A — the trend is the upgrade economy doing its work, not a buff.
The launch pairing logic applies cleanly: shields-and-upgrades in front, Ranged punishment behind, and a flank guard. The unit types overview maps how the frontline families divide the holding work.
Why is the economy the headline?
Because the chain’s strength is duplicate income. The rarity guide makes the general case: availability is a stat, and a unit whose duplicates appear constantly ascends faster than a rare unit you never feed. The tier list’s evidence row for this line says it plainly — strong common duplicate income for Ascension, growing into heavy frontline. In a four-slot army where every Gem and duplicate concentrates, that compounding is the whole game (upgrading).
Two Update 1 arrivals copied the pattern: Spear Militia and Halberder shipped as 2★ bases with 3★ ceilings — the same “grow it, don’t outgrow it” shape, in the Spears class. The Update 1 units page calls the Mercenary line the original template.
How do you raise one?
Duplicates → Ascension. Battles → Mastery toward Level 20. Both concentrate under the four-slot cap, which is the argument for locking the line early and pouring everything into it. Pulling on purpose? The summon odds page has the official rates; the codes page funds the pulls (3,900 Gems across six working codes).
What is still being verified?
No official stat card exists for any stage — the developer’s two sneak-peek cards so far cover the Javelineer and Imperial Halberder. Base stats, the per-stage jumps (especially the Knight’s), and the line’s Gem cost are unrecorded; each gets added with a date as it verifies.
