Command An Army Unit Tier List (Update 1, September 2026)
Command An Army units graded or flagged with evidence — Archer, the Mercenary line, the Update 1 arrivals, and UPDATE 2's Rapier pair on watch.
FAQ
What is the best unit in Command An Army right now?
Where do the Update 1 units rank?
Why does this tier list have so few graded units?
When do Update 1 units get real tiers?
A game that launched September 5, 2026, one major update in, and the search results are already full of confident S-to-C rankings — several grading units that don’t even appear in the game’s official announcements. This page does the opposite of that: it grades every officially documented Command An Army unit, shows the evidence behind each placement, and openly marks what isn’t gradeable yet. You may leave with fewer letters than the competitor lists give you — but every letter here survives a “says who?”
How this list is built
Three evidence levels, shown on every row. They map to the methodology published before any rankings existed:
- ✓ Consensus — community ranking signal from multiple independent sources, agreeing
- ◐ Analysis — in-house role analysis from the guide pages, no match data yet
- ✎ Watching — officially announced but unverified in matches; no tier claimed
The game shipped September 5, 2026; Update 1 (five new units) landed September 12, 2026 (patch notes). That calendar is why most rows below are ✎ — and why that’s the honest state of the art.
Graded units
| Unit | Chain | Tier | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Archer → Longbowman | Archer → Longbowman → Flaming Archers (3-stage; the Flaming stage arrived with Update 1) | A | ✓ Consensus: independent community tier lists rank Archer top-of-role; ◐ our guides document the evolution and the “protected backline” role (unit types) |
| Mercenary → Squire → Knight | 3-stage | B, trending A | ◐ Analysis: a three-stage chain with strong common duplicate income for Ascension, growing into heavy frontline (evolutions, rarity) — no community consensus to upgrade it yet |
Why isn’t anything S? Because our S bar is “warps the match when fielded, answered by itself” with repeated match-level results — evidence that does not exist this early after a September 5, 2026 launch. An S printed today would be a guess wearing a font.
Update 1 arrivals — watching, not graded
All five shipped September 12, 2026. Officially known facts only; verdicts attach as match evidence lands:
| Unit | Rarity | Chain | Class family | First read |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spear Militia | 2★ | → Spear Vanguard (3★) | Spears | Second common-friendly chain after Mercenary — the economy case is real (evolutions) |
| Halberder | 2★ | → Imperial Halberder (3★) | Spears (polearm) | Deepens Spears to two chains; block damage confirmed official — the anti-shield polearm case is real |
| Javelineer | 2★ | → Elite Javelineer (3★) | Ranged | Official card: RNG 140 at Level 1; after the September 13 rework its throws ignore shield damage reduction — the anti-shield ranged niche |
| Flaming Archers | 3★ | ← Longbowman (official info channel) | Ranged | First 3★ ranged; burn now hits players too (official, September 13), but the same patch lessened its range |
| Mace | 3★ | none documented | Melee | Blunt frontline; block damage confirmed official (owner’s sneak post) — the armor-breaker read holds |
The per-unit breakdown with planning logic lives on the Update 1 units page.
Class tiers — the role layer
While unit verdicts accumulate, the class framework from the launch guides holds as the reliable ranking layer — it’s built from the game’s own class design, not match speculation:
| Tier | Class | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Shield lines (Sword & Shield, Heavy Shields) | The wall every composition anchors on — “highest-impact first buy” per the codes spending order |
| Core with frontline | Ranged | The breaker — shreds collisions over a shield wall; folds alone (unit types) |
| Core on attack | Cavalry | Owns the ground before contact; signature of attack tempo (attack vs defend) |
| Situational-strong | Spears | Punishes committed charges behind shields; three documented chains now (Spearman → Pikeman plus the two Update 1 lines) and a September 13 speed buff — watch this space |
| Situational by design | Special | The flex slot; value depends on roster coverage (army building) |
Read the two tables together: class tier tells you the role to secure; unit tier tells you which unit fills it once evidence exists.
What would change this list?
Every placement moves on evidence, dated, per the methodology: a balance patch, a documented stat table, or accumulated match observations. The likeliest near-term movers: any Update 1 unit crossing its evidence bar, any UPDATE 2 arrival once its stats publish, and the Mercenary line upgrading to A the moment its Ascension pace is measured. When the next patch ships, this page re-ranks within days — check the date at the top.
Dated note (September 14): the September 13 balance patch is the first documented mover — it lessened range across the entire Archer lineage plus Flaming Archers and the Crossbow, sped up the Spearman/Pikeman line, and reworked the Javelineer’s shield interactions (full detail on the patch page). Ranged placements carry a watch flag until post-patch matches accumulate; this is exactly the re-rank trigger the methodology promised.
Dated note (September 19): UPDATE 2 (“Guilds and more!”) went live — new units Rapier and Rapier Knight with the Parry trait (Rapiers only), Spearman/Pikeman squads raised 24 → 28, and the game’s first earnings cuts (gems and troop Mastery XP −30%) — fully reverted the same day, so the economy standings are unchanged (patch history). The Rapier pair joins the watch list the moment a star rating or stat card is documented; the Spears flag above gains the +4 squad count as another driver. No graded placement moves until match evidence accumulates.
Dated note (September 21): the second balance patch landed with the Rapier pair’s first official stat lines — Rapier/Rapier Knight ATK INT 1.1 → 0.9 and Rapier Knight’s Parry buffed 20% → 30% (patch history) — plus Spartan BlockDurability 110 → 100, knockback reductions for player classes (Hammer 10 unchanged, Sword & Shield 7, Assassin 4), ranged units removed from AI-driven support troops, and a fix for the infinite horse-stun combo. Still no star ratings, so the pair stays on the watch list — but with real numbers attached for the first time, and a buffed signature trait is exactly the kind of change the methodology says to re-test within days.
How to contribute a placement
Structured observations move units onto this list: unit and stage, matchup, what happened on the point (vocabulary in the upgrading guide). Send them through the contact page — the fastest placements come from observations you can repeat.
